The demand for honey and beeswax in the world market is very high and the demand for Tanzanian honey & beeswax exceeds supply. The international markets for Tanzanian honey & beeswax are highly competitive in terms of quality. In a recent quality test carried out in the UK, Tanzanian honey won by 100% for its 'organic honey' qualities. We have our own honey processing plant in Tabora, just south of Serengeti. Here we strain the honey to separate it from the beeswax, thereafter it gets settled and bottled for shipment to South Africa.
95% of beekeeping in Tanzania is carried out using traditional methods ie. logs & bark hives. Tanzania is endowed with a favourable environment for the production of honey, beeswax and other bee products. The country has millions of hectares of forests and woodlands, including mangrove forests.
The honey is collected in the natural forests, free of cultivation of any kind, this results in the honey being clear from any contaminants that one would get from fertilisers, pesticides etc, producing a much healthier honey. Aswali honey originates from the Miombo Forests in sub tropical Africa. It is predominantly made up from 21 species Brachystegia, 3 species Julbermardia, 3 species Isoberlinia and is known through Africa to produce exceptionally good singleflora / single origin organic honey. This is a unique tasting honey with a good consistency ideal for bottling as a table honey
African honey in general is perceived to be all dark, very strongly flavoured and smoky, which may imply low quality and the presence of foreign matters. This is a HUGE misconception, as our Miombo honey is of high quality and is very dark. The darker honey generally is richer in vitamins and minerals than its lighter counterpart.
Honey quality, in general, is mainly defined from acceptable moisture content, taste and smell. Particularly important is that illegal residues must not be present. Our honey has been tested.
